My First Crochet Blanket
Hi Everybody,
I'm back to show you the blanket I made. I hope you are all doing well! 🙋If you are on my instagram, or if you follow me on facebook or twitter, you will have already seen this picture. I also shared it on my last blog post.
You can't really see the stitching very clearly in this pic, and that was deliberate.
This was the first blanket I have ever made.
I was looking to make a blanket that would be easy to care for, meaning it could be thrown into the washing machine and the dryer, easy peasy.
Right off the bat, that ruled out using wool...this time. 😉
Before finding the pattern I was going to use, I already knew that I wanted to try the Bernat Blanket yarn (Affiliate Link - USA).
It is soft and squishy, and easy to care for. Perfect!
I also chose this yarn because I knew I wouldn't be making the blanket for the next year, meaning it works up quickly and I wouldn't be crocheting for months on end. 😀
It is a super bulky weight yarn (size 6), so it works up fast!
Next, I found a pattern and started making the blanket. I got through 2 skeins of yarn and realized that I wasn't going to be able to make a very big blanket with what I had, and when I checked the store for more yarn of the same colour they only had 1 left! I had to think quick.
The pattern I was using had me crocheting single crochet into the front post of each stitch for the whole blanket. I realize now that it probably wasn't a very wise choice in patterns, because of how much yarn I had, and how long it would take to make. I would still like to make a blanket in the future using this pattern, especially since I purchased it already. If you want to check it out, it is called the Bliss Blanket and you can find the pattern here. If I continued making this blanked with the yarn I had I would have needed at least 14 skeins, easy.
I really like the way the pattern looks, and I think it would make a nice weighted blanket using the wool suggested.
On to the pattern I did use.
First of all, I turned to google to find a pattern I could use, which wouldn't use more than 7 skeins of the Bernat Blanket yarn (Affiliate Link - Canada). You see, I wanted to make a blanket that is big enough to fit a queen size bed, but could also be used as a throw for two to snuggle up under for on the couch.
I found the perfect pattern, and thankfully I was able to make a blanket that was big enough using the yarn I had, with just a bit left over.
Click here to check out the free pattern I found by Fiber Flux.
The best part is it even has a video tutorial on Youtube here.
It is called the Family Room Throw.
I had to do a bit of math to figure out how big I could make it without running out of yarn.
The finished size of my blanket ended up being 172 cm x 241cm (68 x 95").
It fits on a queen size mattress (Canadian) with 10.2 cm (4") overlapping on each side, and the length goes from the top of the mattress, over the end to the bottom of the mattress. Not bad.
The hook size I used was a 12mm plastic crochet hook (Affiliate Link - Canada).
I started out with 126 chains, and the pattern works up quickly using a V stitch combo (see pattern link for more info).
Here is the only decent picture I managed to get of it before I gave it away. Not a very good one! 😜
I will definitely be making more blankets, and I would consider using this pattern again for more throws for sure
I will also use this yarn again to make more throws. I like that it can be washed and dried in the dryer, especially since I have pets, so I would need to be able to do that.
I will say that even though it says it works up quick, it's a blanket, so don't underestimate the amount of time you will need.
I was working for hours at a time some days, waking at 5am, and crocheting for as long as I could before my hand, neck and shoulder got sore.
Some days I didn't think I would be able to do it again the next day, but I did it. 😀
I must say that I am proud of myself for doing it, and I think it turned out pretty good.
